The run to the finish wire in Saturday's $200,000 B.C. Derby at Hastings Park was one for the record books.

In one of the most exciting stretch drives witnessed in recent Derby history, Kim Hart's courageous three-year-old colt, Wandering, held off a late charge from Yaletown, owned by Marlene and Linda Chisholm.

Jockey Sam Krasner raced Wandering in the middle of the pack early, then guided him between horses to narrowly prevail over the 40-1 Yaletown.

Odds-on favourite Digital Dan, ridden by Gerry Olguin, tired late. It was a race worthy of the high emotions experienced by many participants. Trainer Steve Bryant was rewarded for having faith in owner Kim Hart, who purchased Wandering in June for $62,500 US at Hollywood Park.

It was also emotional for Bryant to proudly watch his ailing father Pat, smiling in the winner circle. "No one can imagine how great I feel. Having my dad here on this special day is so great," said Bryant, with traces of mist in his eyes.

The race also proved that owners and fans always have a chance of walking home a winner.

Yaletown, who earned $40,000 getting beaten by a short head, was bought early this year by trainer Jerome Partington for $2,500. Yaletown has advanced his lifetime earning to $86,669. He also earned breeder Canmor Farms a respectable 'B.C.-bred' bonus.
