When it comes to chutzpah, the owners of Roscoe Pito, winner of last week's prestigious $300,000 B.C. Derby at Hastings, are in a class all their own.

No matter what happens down the road with their horse, you have to take your hat off to this local group of blue-collar guys, who enjoy taking risks.

The Derby win was worth $190,000, pushing his earnings over $350,000.

The horse cost $4,700. Ownership includes five partners, who each put up $500 for 10 per cent. Trainer John Snow, (who selected the horse) with another partner purchased, 25 per cent each.

After Roscoe Pito's win in the $100,000 Emerald Derby and prior to the B.C. Derby, Snow and company received an offer of $200,000 US for their horse.

"We turned that offer down, simply because it was made only days before the Derby," said Snow.

"It really wasn't that tough of a decision. Now we are in the same predicament again. I've got a new offer now from different people in Southern California. And it's getting up there to the point where it's getting too good to turn down."

When you factor in the offer, which could be around $300,000 US, along with current income, you're going up to about $600,000.

"Let's face it, a possible payoff of $60,000 for a $500 investment -- how do you turn that down?" said co-owner Brad Yerxa.

Snow's 25 per cent share of the horse could be worth $150,000 or more.

"For us, it would mean paying off our bills and buying a nice house along with starting a nice trust for our daughter Dakota," said Snow's wife Tammy, a former jockey herself. "It would be nice to see Roscoe running in the big races in the States and let people know, we do breed good horses in British Columbia."
